Public Carpark Improvements

Urban Development Project

I contributed to an urban development project aimed at optimizing a public carpark layout, improving traffic flow & safety, and enhancing user experience at a neighborhood mall. The main motivation was to better utilize the available space so that it can accomodate more motorcycles as it was initially designed with insufficient motorcycle lots.

Here are some key highlights:

In Summary

Key Contributions:

  • Conducted site assessments to identify inefficiencies in car and motorcycle parking allocation.
  • Researched on the government guidelines for legal requirements and metrics for carparks - Code of Practice for Parking Places (Provision of Parking Places and Parking Spaces) Rules.
  • Collaborated with mall management to ensure compliance with urban development regulations.
  • Developed visual presentations to communicate design proposals effectively to stakeholders.
  • Achieved a significant increase in available parking spaces and user satisfaction post-implementation, with an increase of 420% utility for the same space.

Space Optimization & Traffic Flow

...

Motorcycles were forced to park illegally, sometimes hidden behind a pillar within close proximity of a turning radius of a car negotiating a turn.

...

A similar situation on the other side of the carpark, with more motorcycles parked illegally, not by choice.

...

In my communications with the mall management, I highlighted key locations where motorcycles usually have to park at, and why something should be done.

...

To create my proposals, I had to take measurements of the space. Firstly with my iPhone, but used a measuring tape when I realized it wasn't as accurate as I needed it to be.

Key Contributions:

  • Conducted site assessments to identify inefficiencies in car and motorcycle parking allocation and the feasibilty of removing one car lot.
  • Proposed design changes to maximize space utilization while improving accessibility.
  • Developed layout improvements that reduced congestion and enhanced safety

Stakeholder Collaboration

...

One of the proposals that I submitted.

...

Another proposal that ended up being the one that they based the final design on.

...

The space today.

...

What was initially one car lot accomodates for 13 motorcycle lots now, increasing the utility of the space by 420%.

Key Contributions:

  • Worked with mall management to ensure compliance with urban planning regulations.
  • Created detailed visual presentations to effectively communicate design proposals.
  • Engaged with community stakeholders to address user needs and concerns.
  • Increased the utility of a space by 420% by converting a single car lot with void space into 13 motorcycle lots.

Additional Contributions:

  • Conducted post-implementation studies to assess improvements in user satisfaction.
  • Suggested future-proofing strategies to accommodate evolving urban needs.

This experience allowed me apply my knowledge as a game developer, especially my experience with level design, to solve a real-world problem. I discovered that there's many overlaps not just in the workflow and processes, but also in the interpersonal aspects of achieving the intended results, and the compromises that have to be made.
